You spent years looking far away,
Thinking you had to go a long distance.
You thought if you got the best grades,
Or the most important jobs,
Or if you looked just right,
You would finally be happy.
But you were following someone else’s map.
The place you were looking for wasn’t there.
One day, you will stop walking.
You will sit down and look at your life.
You will see that “success” was just a big house,
But it felt empty without the people you love.
You will learn that happiness is not a trophy.
It is the way your heart feels
When the tea is ready or the sun goes down.
It is being kind to yourself.
It is taking off the heavy coat
Of what other people think.
You are learning to be your own friend.
You are learning to love who you are,
Even if you are still growing.
Happiness is not about fixing every problem.
It is finding a little bit of light
In the show you like to watch,
In a warm cup of morning tea,
Or in just being yourself,
Even when people are watching.
You will take a deep breath and realize
It was never about getting to the end.
It was never about being like everyone else.
It was always about you.
It was about finding your own light
And the home you were building
Inside of yourself all along.
